From Photo to Frosting

I used to watch Cake Boss and Ace of Cakes all the time, and over the years I was fortunate enough to meet both of them. They inspired me to try my hand at different cake-decorating mediums and techniques. My cakes are not always perfect but I’ve learned a lot along the way, and I’m still learning.

When my kids heard about the show Nailed It, they told me I should apply because I would “nail it” every time. I love the confidence they have in my skills, even when I feel like I’m lacking experience or technique. Sometimes people send me pictures or ideas of what they’re envisioning, and my first thought is, You want me to do what now?! Somehow, though, I manage to create something acceptable… well, for the most part.

This space is where inspiration meets reality. Here you’ll see my finished creations, often paired with the original photo or idea that sparked them. I’ve even included a few of the not-so-great cakes, because it’s important for you to know that I have flops too. I’m not perfect at this and that’s okay. Every cake is part of the learning process.

I don’t have photos of every cake I’ve made, and that’s mostly because I get so wrapped up in the baking and decorating that I forget to take pictures. More often than not, I only remember after the cake has already been delivered and enjoyed. For a long time, I used my husband’s digital camera and didn’t feel the need to have my own phone. Even now that I do, remembering to snap a photo is still something I’m learning.

When I’m in the zone, documenting the moment just isn’t top of mind. I’m focused on the frosting, the details, and bringing the cake to life. I also know some of my photos aren’t perfect; photography isn’t really my strength, and sometimes I don’t even realize the camera settings are off until I’m looking at them later.

I’m trying to do better, one cake at a time. For now, I hope these imperfect photos still share the heart behind each creation and give you a cozy little glimpse into the joy I find in baking for special moments.

My hope is that Photo to Frosting encourages you to be brave, try something new, and create a special cake for a special occasion. It doesn’t have to be flawless to be meaningful and if nothing else, it should always be delicious.

Inspired by the Masters: Meeting the Celebrities Who Sparked My Cake Journey

So many baking and cooking shows exist today, but as a young mom, I had a lot of quiet moments feeding my babies. I loved that time, but the active part of me felt like I could be doing more than just sitting on the couch. Regular soap operas didn’t interest me, and most other shows didn’t either and you can only watch your favorite movies so many times before they stop feeling special.

Then I stumbled upon The Cake Boss, Ace of Cakes, Anna Olson, and others. Before Netflix and other streaming platforms, I was at the mercy of TV schedules. My husband would find DVDs of various episodes and buy them for me so I could play one while feeding the babies. It felt like the perfect way to pass the time while learning cake-decorating techniques I didn’t know. Eventually, streaming made it even easier to watch episodes on demand.

My husband also discovered contests where, if we won, we could meet these baking celebrities in person. When we received the call that we had won a contest sponsored by PAM to attend the Baking and Sweets Show in Toronto and meet Buddy Valastro, we were over the moon! The prize included a limo ride, a hotel stay, two full days at the show, and a VIP pass to meet Buddy in person and take a photo. (I’ll add another page with the newspaper article about this.)

Later, my husband entered another contest to meet Ace of Cakes, and we were thrilled when we received the call that we had won that as well! We were also fortunate to meet Anna Olson, another baking icon, whose recipes I still make faithfully every year, some of them have even become holiday traditions for friends and family.

Meeting these celebrities was such a special opportunity. They inspired my cake-decorating journey, gave me the courage to try new techniques, and reminded me that even the experts make mistakes. It was a sweet lesson in creativity, confidence, and the joy of sharing baking with others.

A Slice of Forever: Wedding Creations

This section showcases the variety of wedding cakes I’ve had the joy of creating over the years. Some are more elaborate and challenging than others, but each one carries personal touches and meaningful details chosen by the newlyweds, making their special day even more memorable. From elegant simplicity to intricate designs, every cake tells a story of love, celebration, and the sweetness of shared moments.

Chocolate, Chocolate and more Chocolate

For this wedding, the couple asked to come by for a cake taste testing in search of the perfect chocolate cake. I baked four different chocolate cake recipes, and I’ll admit, I was more than a little nervous. In the end, they chose their favorite… and happily took the rest home to enjoy.

Their vision was a two-tiered, outdoor-themed chocolate wedding cake,  two large round layered cakes adorned with fudge pine cones and bite-sized New York–style cheesecakes, each topped with a fanned strawberry and a sprig of fresh mint. Set against the backdrop of nature, it was truly a magical outdoor wedding; rich, cozy, and full of chocolate love.

These delicious New York–style cheesecake bites were each displayed on a tiny doily and arranged on a rustic slice of wood that my Dad carefully cut from a few logs for me.

It was the perfect touch, tying beautifully into the outdoors theme and adding a cozy, handmade feel to the dessert display.

Elegant Wedding Cake

My husband’s aunt was getting married and asked if I could make their wedding cake. They wanted a three-tiered square chocolate cake with chocolate ganache filling, covered in white fondant with just a touch of blue, and adorned with lots of meringue royal icing roses; her favorite! The topper was a little scene of the couple dancing, a nod to her soon-to-be husband’s ballroom teaching and their shared love of dance. They also requested “Mr. and Mrs.” piped on the cake, along with their wedding date.

The design was simple yet elegant, and they absolutely loved it! It was such a joy to create a cake that reflected their personalities and the love they share.

Cupcake Wedding Cake

When my brother-in-law and his fiancée asked if we would help with the food and their wedding cake, we were thrilled to be part of making their day special. They wanted a non-traditional cake: square-shaped and tiered with Black Forest cupcakes; each adorned with a fondant rose.

This was one of my first attempts at working with fondant, and I have to say, they turned out not too shabby! The cupcakes were chocolate with cherry filling, topped with cream cheese frosting and a delicate fondant rose. It was such a joy to help create something unique and meaningful for their celebration.

A Wedding Cake With a Surprise

An elegant four-tier white wedding cake with a surprise superhero twist hidden on the reverse side. This cake was requested by my husband’s cousin and her fiancé for their wedding. Their vision was a classic, refined wedding cake on the front, with a playful and meaningful reveal on the back. Wonder Woman and Superman coming together to represent them both.

This was the largest and most intricate cake I have ever created, with extensive fondant work and fine details that needed to be just right to achieve a polished, professional look. While I can’t locate the inspiration photos they originally shared, one for the elegant front and one for the superhero back, I clearly remember the sense of pride I felt once the cake was finished. It truly felt like I had pulled it off.

That feeling was confirmed when the bride and groom saw the cake and absolutely loved it. It was a wonderful reminder that even the most ambitious designs can come together with patience, creativity, and a little courage.

A Cheesecake for "I Do"

This couple asked me to create a New York–style cheesecake for their wedding. They envisioned four layers, wrapped with a thick black ribbon accented by a thin white ribbon, and finished with their wedding flowers on top.

Though the design was simple, it was beautifully elegant and a huge hit with their guests.

Christmas Themed Cakes

Every year, I secretly hope someone will ask me to make a Christmas-themed cake. I’ve seen so many beautiful creations, but with just too many treats around the house, baking a cake just for the fun of it has always felt a little unnecessary… and, honestly, a bit odd when it’s not even Christmas yet.

This year, though, I was asked to make not just one but four Christmas-themed cakes! I was beyond excited. It felt like a holiday dream come true, a chance to bring festive magic to life in cake and frosting.

Christmas Tree Cake

Here’s a picture to serve as inspiration for the vision; a starting point for the cake designs that followed.

And here’s the finished product! A 4 layer vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream. A sweet celebration of the vision brought to life in cake and frosting.

Gingerbread Themed Cake

Here’s a picture to inspire the vision for a gingerbread-themed cake; a starting point for the festive creation that followed.

And here’s the finished masterpiece that sprang from the gingerbread-themed inspiration. A 4 layer Pumpkin Spice Cake with brown butter buttercream icing and a hint of maple flavoring, brought to life in frosting, gingerbread men, and a little holiday magic.

And here they are, all on display in the fridge! We each take turns opening it just to catch a glimpse of all that Christmas magic flowing from the sight of those cakes. It really makes us feel like it’s Christmas already… LOL!

Let It Snow!

I was asked to make a Christmas-themed cake for a church Christmas dinner. I chose a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and decorated it with caroling snowmen. It turned out pretty cute and festive enough to bring some holiday cheer to the table!

Sweetly Supporting Good Causes

Sweetly Supporting Good Causes is all about using baking to give back. Over the years, I’ve had the joy of creating cakes and baked goods for fundraisers supporting Movember, helping youth attend camp, and contributing to other meaningful causes close to the heart. Whether it’s a simple cake or a table full of treats, each bake is made with care, purpose, and the hope that something sweet can help make a difference.

Supporting Movember

When I was asked to make 100 cupcakes for a Movember fundraiser, I happily stepped up to the challenge. It was one of my first large cupcake orders, and I wanted to make each one feel a little extra special. I hand-cut all the tiny mustaches and attached them to toothpicks, then created custom cupcake liners for each flavor to elevate them just a bit beyond the ordinary.

The flavors were thoughtfully chosen and lovingly finished: a chocolate cake topped with chocolate Swiss meringue buttercream, sprinkled with toffee bits and coarse decorating sugar; a cherry cupcake with cherry Swiss meringue buttercream, dusted with red glitter and white coarse sugar; and a classic vanilla cupcake crowned with white chocolate Swiss meringue buttercream, finished with white glitter and coarse decorating sugar.

Seeing them all together was such a rewarding moment and knowing they were part of supporting a meaningful cause made the experience even sweeter.

Lemon Raspberry Cake

This lemon raspberry cake is made with layers of soft lemon cake filled with a bright raspberry filling, then covered in a raspberry cream cheese icing. The icing is naturally tinted with dried raspberry powder, giving it that lovely variegated look along with real colour and flavour.

It’s finished with fluffy mounds of frosting, a drizzle of white chocolate (which I maybe should have thinned a bit more so it dripped just right but that’s all part of the learning process), white chocolate triangles, fresh raspberries, and candied lemon to top it all off.

A simple cake, gently elevated with a few thoughtful garnishes, turning it into something a little more elegant and very much enjoyed.

Apple Crumble Pie Cake

We had a vision for an apple crumble pie cake.Vanilla cake lightly spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, filled with homemade apple pie filling, and finished with swirls of vanilla buttercream. It was garnished with fresh apple slices, a drizzle of caramel sauce, and generous chunks of baked crumble.

It looked really pretty, even with the runny caramel, and the best part came later when the person who purchased it at the cake auction let us know just how much they enjoyed it. Hearing that the cake was absolutely delicious and loved by everyone made the whole experience feel extra sweet.

Cakes, Cupcakes, Tarts and Sourdough Bread

For this fundraiser, my kids and I decided to make an Easter egg cake, an Oreo cake, and a sweet little sheep cake. We also baked up some tarts, cupcakes, and a few loaves of sourdough bread. It was truly a family effort, filled with flour-dusted counters and lots of laughter.

We were so happy to report that everything sold, and our baked goods donation alone raised enough money to send four youth to camp! Such an exciting and heartwarming reminder of how baking together can help make a meaningful difference.

Easter Egg Cake

The inspiration photo that got our creative juices flowing for this Easter egg cake.

The result of those creative juices; three layers of vanilla cake, softly colored in pastel blue, green, and yellow for a sweet little surprise when you slice into the cake.

Oreo Cake

The photo that inspired the oreo cake.

The end result of the Oreo cake and what a hit it was! It was auctioned off for $400, and due to its popularity, we ended up making a second one for another cake auction.

The second Oreo cake and we were definitely getting better at the chocolate drip with this one!

Cute Lamb Cake

The marshmallow lamb cake photo that was just too cute not to try.

Our recreation! So cute and fluffy with all those marshmallows!

Sky High Chocolate Caramel Cheesecake Cake

I saw this flavor combination and was immediately intrigued. The family who purchased our recreation loved it so much that they came back asking for the recipe. It was one of those creations that came together by using what I had on hand and trusting what I thought would complement each other one of those happy, in-the-moment bakes that’s a little hard to recreate exactly, but all the more special because of it.

This was such a fun cake to make. A rich chocolate cake filled with caramel cream cheese filling, fluffly caramel buttercream, and finished with a drizzle of caramel sauce, crushed pretzels, taffy bits, and chopped pecans.  Sweet, a little salty, and full of cozy goodness.

Spring Cupcakes

My kids’ school was hosting a fundraiser bake sale, so my kids got right to work baking, and my oldest even tried her hand at decorating. They turned out really cute, and the pride on their faces said it all. When they came home from school, they were so excited to share that their cupcakes were some of the first items to sell out!

Carrot Cake

For this fundraiser, I wanted to make a traditional carrot cake but give it a more elegant feel. When I came across this picture, I just knew I had to try it. It felt like the perfect way to dress up a classic while still keeping its cozy charm.

Lemon Chick Cake

Because this fundraiser was just before Easter weekend, I wanted to create cakes that would complement the holiday and also appeal to the children. This picture of a sweet little chick was simply too cute to ignore, and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to pair all that cheerful yellow with a bright lemon cake.

Bunny Cake

When I came across this adorable bunny cake picture, I knew it had to be the third cake in our collection of donated cakes for the fundraiser. My kids couldn’t agree more. We decided that a classic vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream would be the perfect complement to this sweet little bunny.

The Pictures Recreated Into Cake

We were all so pleased with how the cakes turned out and the guests at the cake auction fundraiser felt the same. They were a huge hit and made the experience even sweeter for everyone involved.

Butterfly Cake

This fundraiser fell just before Mother’s Day, making it feel extra special. One of my daughters has always loved butterflies, and the moment she saw this picture, she knew we had to try it.

We felt it turned out not too shabby! The lighting in this photo doesn’t quite do it justice; the colours were softer and lighter in person, but it came together so nicely and stayed true to the inspiration. We absolutely loved how it turned out.

Chocolate Bliss

Since we already had a more playful butterfly cake for Mother’s Day, we decided to balance it out with something a little more elegant. This image became our inspiration, and from there we let creativity guide the rest of the design.

Chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate! This cake featured layers of rich chocolate cake, chocolate fudge, and chocolate buttercream. The garnishes included white, milk, and semi-sweet chocolate, finished with a delicate touch of gold. Elegant and decadent, it was a true showstopper that captured everyone’s attention.

Flower Cupcake Bouquet

Flowers are such a classic gift for Mother’s Day, and we wanted to bring that joy into something fun. We came across this picture of a simple cake and loved it, so we decided to take the colour scheme and adapt the design onto cupcakes instead!

Cupcakes taking shape!

We loved how these turned out! In the end, we made two cupcake “bouquets,” and they were admired by everyone who saw them.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake

We were in a chocolate chip cookie phase and decided our final cake should be inspired by everyone’s favorite treat. When we came across this picture, we thought, why not? We could definitely recreate this!

Well, we were able to recreate this cake! But as I was turning it on the cake turntable to add the final finishing touches, my mixing bowl was a little too close and ended up leaving a line right across the front. A prime example of those little mishaps that happen in the kitchen!

Strawberry Shortcake - Flop

At one of the fundraisers, someone was surprised there wasn’t a strawberry shortcake up for auction. I decided to fix that by making one. A light angel food cake layered with fresh strawberries, homemade vanilla custard, real whipped cream, and topped with chocolate-dipped strawberries. It looked amazing… until it didn’t. I quickly realized that the delicate cake couldn’t support the weight of the chocolate-covered strawberries. Needless to say, this cake never made it to the fundraiser, but my children certainly weren’t complaining!

Fall School Fundraiser With Pumpkin Cake Pops

When cake pops became all the rage, we thought it would be fun to try our hand at them for our kids’ school fall fundraiser. We made both vanilla and chocolate, and to tell them apart, we dipped the vanilla in colourful sprinkles and the chocolate in crushed Oreo crumbs. The students loved them, and it was such a joy to see everyone enjoying our little creations!

Valentines School Fundraiser

Valentine’s school fundraiser cupcakes! For another school fundraiser, I was inspired by all the pictures I’d seen of people piping chocolate designs to place on cakes and cupcakes. I thought, how hard could it be? Well… not as easy as I expected!

There were lots of broken chocolate hearts for my kids to enjoy along the way, but after a little practice, I got the hang of estimating the right amount of pressure so the chocolate would sit perfectly in the icing without breaking.

Celebrating Life, One Cake at a Time

Here are some of my creations made to celebrate life’s special moments: birthdays, baby gender reveals, graduations, anniversaries, retirements, and more. Each cake is made with love and a little extra sweetness to help mark the occasion in a memorable way.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake

My kids loved the look of the chocolate chip cookie cake so much that they asked if we could make another one to bring along when we visited their grandmother. As you can see, the chocolate drip wasn’t our best, but it still tasted delicious and that’s what really mattered. We made a vanilla cake and folded mini chocolate chips into the batter to mimic a classic chocolate chip cookie, which made it extra fun and impressive when sliced.

We shared the cake with some of the other residents where their grandmother lives, and everyone seemed to enjoy being included in our visit. It turned a simple cake into a sweet moment of connection, and that made it even more special. 🍪

A Sister’s Wish, A Brother’s Bake

When one of our daughters was getting ready for her birthday, she drew a picture of the cake she wanted. Our son saw her drawing and confidently said, “I can make that!” And so he did. This is his recreation of the cake she imagined.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a photo of her original drawing, but his sister insisted he replicated it perfectly, even down to the little marbling details in the fondant. Moments like this make my heart so full. I love how my children look for ways to make each other’s special days feel even more special

Graduation

Graduating from anything is a huge accomplishment. Whether it’s public school, middle school, high school, college, university, trade school, or anything in between. It’s a celebration of dedication, hard work, and sometimes just the fact that you made it through… which is worth celebrating too!

These two were excited to be graduating high school and looking ahead to their futures in their chosen fields of study. I was more than happy to help make their day a little sweeter by creating a cake to celebrate such a meaningful milestone. 🎓

Pumpkin Spice Cake

When our church was planning a fall dinner, they asked if I could make a cake to go along with it. I happily said yes and reached for my Pumpkin Spice Cake with cream cheese icing because fall practically demands it. I dressed it up with candy corn and gingerbread cookies, then tucked a little scarecrow right in the middle, popping up through the cookies as if he’d wandered in from the pumpkin patch to say hello.

It started as a simple idea, but Photo to Frosting moments like this are where the fun really happens; taking a theme, adding a dash of imagination, and seeing where the frosting leads.

Fall Gingerbread Cookies

Extra-warm, spiced gingerbread cookies for everyone to enjoy. I couldn’t help but sneak a few little skeletons into the mix; blending the comfort of fall harvest flavors with a playful nod to the upcoming Halloween celebrations.

Farm Animal Birthday Cake

When I was asked if I’d have time to make a birthday cake ready for a specific day, I checked my calendar and said yes, having no idea what I was actually getting myself into. When they sent the inspiration photo, I wasn’t sure it would even be possible to recreate. I took a deep breath and reminded myself, I can do this.

I studied the picture closely, breaking it down layer by layer and looking at how each character was crafted. Once I picked it apart piece by piece, it became much easier to imagine the process and made the project feel manageable.

Vanilla with raspberry filling for the bottom layer, lemon for the next, then chocolate for the remaining layers.

Even though my initial thought was, Wow… I don’t think I can pull this off, it turned out so good. The family was delighted with the final creation, and the guests loved it too. And honestly, a little bit of a challenge every now and then is good for me.

Puppy Dog Birthday Cake

For this birthday, I was sent the sweetest puppy cake inspiration. They asked for a little dog tag etched with the number “2” to celebrate a very special second birthday. The pictures looked fairly straightforward, but working with fondant can be a bit tricky, especially when it comes to mixing and matching the right colours.

I make my own fondant so I can create exactly the shades I need, and because it tastes so much better too. Paying attention to the small details is what really pulls a cake together and gives it that finished, polished look. This one was a vanilla cake with a raspberry filling, and it was just as delightful on the inside as it was on the outside.

Baby Shower

When I was asked to create this baby shower cake, I felt truly honored. The colour scheme was chosen to match the invitations and decorations for the celebration. Making sure the patterns lined up perfectly all the way around the cake wasn’t easy, but somehow it all came together.

The most challenging and most fun part, was creating the tiny baby booties to sit on top of the cake. They were almost too cute to eat! Cakes like this are such a joy to make, especially when they’re part of celebrating a brand-new little life.

Simple Birthday Cake

When I was sent this picture to recreate, I was asked not to include the little baby booties this time. I had a hard time finding larger white pearls, so I decided to make my own using white candy melts, finished with a light dusting of edible glitter.

It’s a simpler design, but achieving a perfectly smooth buttercream finish is anything but easy. Those clean lines take patience and care. This cake was a vanilla cake with a raspberry filling, proving once again that sometimes the most understated designs can be the most elegant.

Puppy, Monkey, Baby Cake

I remember seeing that bizarre puppy, monkey, baby character in commercials and not quite understanding it; though to be fair, I probably wasn’t paying very close attention. So you can imagine my surprise when I was asked to make a birthday cake featuring that very creature!

They requested a vanilla cake with a strawberry filling and cream cheese icing, and while the character itself was a bit quirky, the end result was a fun cake that brought lots of smiles to the celebration. Sometimes the most unexpected requests turn into the most memorable bakes.

2 Legit 2 Quit

This was the picture that got our creative juices flowing for the retro/hip hop birthday cake. From the cassette player to the microphone, it perfectly set the vibe for the whole celebration.

And here is the photo for the inspiration for the sugar cookies.

The decorated sugar cookies turned out even better than I expected! I had a bit of a challenge getting a nice shimmering gold, and while they weren’t perfect, they still looked sweet and festive. Definitely a skill I’m still learning, painting gold and silver accents is trickier than it looks!

The two-tier retro/hip hop cake, topped with a cassette player and microphone, paired perfectly with the cookies. I was so proud of how it all came together, and the family who ordered it couldn’t stop smiling. A little bit of hard work, a lot of creativity, and a lot of fun!

The cupcakes were simple but playful. I printed and assembled little toppers to tie everything together, giving each bite a touch of the same fun retro vibe as the cake and cookies. Sweet treats that brought a smile to everyone’s face!

Reese’s Pieces Cake

Chocolate and peanut butter lovers, rejoice! This cake was inspired by everyone’s favorite candy, packed with layers of chocolate cake, peanut butter filling, and finished with a colourful cascade of Reese’s Pieces on top. Sweet, nutty, and fun, just like the candy itself!

Car Birthday Cake

Sometimes I’m given very little direction for a celebration cake, leaving the design entirely up to me. Honestly, picking a design can feel more stressful than actually making the cake. Not being 100% sure if the family will love it adds a little extra pressure!

For this birthday cake, the request came last minute, and the only hint I had was that the child was turning six and loved cars. I started browsing pictures to spark some ideas and came across one that was simple enough to create in the limited time I had. Perfect for a 5-going-on-6-year-old!

When my kids saw it, they were excited and reassured me that the family would love it too. And they did! Seeing their faces light up made all the stress worth it.

Making Birthdays Away From Home Special

When cooking for a group of over 100 girls at camp, on youth road trips, or at youth conferences, there’s almost always someone celebrating a birthday. To make their day extra special, I always plan for birthday cupcakes.

It’s my way of showing the youth that they are truly cared for, and I hope this small gesture lets them know they’re celebrated. The cupcakes are chocolate and vanilla with creamy vanilla cream cheese frosting, and I always make sure to include vegan and gluten-free options so everyone can enjoy a sweet treat.

Fruit Tree Blossom Cake

I can’t quite remember what this cake was for, but I do remember it was a rustic-style cake made for a spring celebration. Sometimes it’s the simple, natural touches that make a cake feel special and perfectly seasonal.

Piping Practice

After decorating a cake, there’s always extra icing and for the longest time, I never knew what to do with it. Later, I learned you can actually freeze it for future cakes, but until then, I let my kids have a little fun!

They would grab plates and use them as their canvases, practicing piping and getting creative with all the leftover frosting. They absolutely loved it, and it became such a fun way for them to experiment and explore their own creativity in the kitchen.

Birthday Cakes With Heart

When planning my dad’s surprise birthday party, I was asked to make the birthday cake. I thought long and hard about what he truly enjoys. I remembered his mother used to make him a Black Forest cake, but I couldn’t recall him having one in years. What I did remember were the little treats he loved throughout the year: apple fritter donuts, cherry pie, bear claws, plum cake, Bavarian apple cheesecake, Reese’s Pieces, and oatmeal raisin cookies.

I ran my idea by my siblings to see if they’d be okay with a non-traditional “birthday cake” in the form of a personalized dessert platter, and they gave me the green light. I tried out a few new recipes (with my kids happily volunteering as taste testers) and created a collection of desserts that represented my dad’s favorites.

When he saw the platter, he was genuinely surprised and confirmed that he didn’t have a single favorite cake, but this assortment of his beloved treats was perfect. It was thoughtful, meaningful, and full of love, a birthday celebration in every bite.

Celebrating 104 Years!

When I was asked to make a special cake celebrating the Kiwanis Club’s 104th year of service, I knew I wanted to support this incredible organization. My husband helped by creating a personalized edible printed image, and I incorporated the club’s colours into the decoration. The cake was a hit, and everyone at the celebration enjoyed it!

Cupcakes to Celebrate the Countdown

When I received a request for New Year’s Eve countdown cupcakes using Oreo cookies, I thought, No problem, that should be easy! But as anyone who’s tried it knows, when you untwist an Oreo, the icing isn’t always that perfect, white, smooth layer like they show in the YouTube videos. Bits of chocolate cookie inevitably get everywhere!

With a little patience and effort, I was able to make them look presentable enough for the celebration. Sometimes it’s the small imperfections that make a treat feel homemade and extra special.

75 Is Coming

This birthday cake was inspired by Game of Thrones. Since I hadn’t watched the series or read the books, I did a little research to make sure I could capture the essence of the show. The request included an edible picture, and I worked to bring the rest of the cake to life: a border that resembled dragon scales, dragon eggs, the Iron Throne, and a special crown.

To make it even more personal, I added “Happy Name Day” and swapped the iconic phrase “Winter is Coming” for “75 is Coming”. When the person who ordered the cake saw it, she was brought to tears, it exceeded anything she had imagined.

This special cake was a lemon cake with lemon buttercream, combining the perfect balance of flavor and design for an unforgettable celebration.

Belly Dancer Cake Birthday Cake

When I was asked to make a belly dancing cake for my husband’s aunt, who had a friend visiting from Scotland, I came across this picture and used it for inspiration. The cake captured the colourful, fun spirit of their belly dancing costumes and the joy they share while dancing.

All of their belly dancing friends absolutely loved it, and it was such a delight to bring a little extra sweetness to their celebration!

Celebration Cake

I was asked to make this cake for a small youth class to celebrate a special occasion. To make it personal, I added decorated sugar cookies that reflected each youth’s interests: one featured dogs, another basketball, and others highlighted photography and baking.

It was such a fun way to make each young person feel seen and celebrated, turning a simple cake into something truly special.

Back To The Future

What a fun cake! This birthday cake was inspired by a time-traveling adventure, incorporating the clock tower, the time machine clock, and the DeLorean time-travel features. It was such a unique and exciting concept to bring to life!

It took some back-and-forth communication to gather all the necessary details to accurately recreate the time machine clock, but once everything was clarified, the design started to come together beautifully. Cake was red velvet with cream cheese icing.

The cake featured lots of intricate details, requiring a steady hand for both piping and fondant work. When all was said and done, it turned out to be an amazing cake; both fun and impressive, and perfectly suited for a birthday celebration full of imagination.

Minion Royal Celebration Cake

This two-tier birthday cake was a playful celebration of fun and imagination. Covered in smooth white buttercream, it was bordered with cheerful yellow and blue accents, and featured a sweet birthday greeting to mark the special day.

The cake was topped with a detailed Minion, Bob, dressed in a royal cape and crown, holding his beloved teddy bear. Every little detail was carefully crafted to bring the character to life, making it a memorable centerpiece that delighted both kids and adults alike.

Chocolately Birthday Joy

Our oldest daughter was all smiles as she got ready to dig into her birthday cake, lovingly decorated by her younger siblings. Chocolatey, fun, and full of love, this cake was as sweet to make as it was to eat!

Cupcakes Fit for a Princess

These cupcakes were decorated in fondant and finished with glitter and edible pearls, creating an elegant and magical look that any princess would adore. I loved how the details came together to make each cupcake feel special.

The family sent me a picture of the cupcakes all arranged on the stand, ready for the birthday party. They looked absolutely stunning, and it was such a joy to see my little creations shine at the celebration!

Celebrating a Valued Colleague

This large slab cake, with layers of vanilla and chocolate, was created to celebrate a cherished colleague’s retirement. It was simply decorated with fondant flowers and finished with chocolate and fudge buttercream for a classic, elegant look.

To accompany the cake, we made a few dozen matching cupcakes, giving everyone a sweet treat to enjoy while honoring the retiree. A heartfelt celebration made even sweeter with a little frosting and love!

Last-Minute Elegant Cake

When I was asked to make a birthday cake at the last minute, I happened to have a few extra decorations leftover from recent cakes. Since the family didn’t have a specific design in mind, I decided to incorporate these pieces to create something elegant and unique.

The result was a simple yet refined cake, with thoughtful details that made it feel special despite the short notice. Sometimes, a little creativity and leftover decorations are all it takes to make a memorable celebration!

Chocolate Anniversary with Daisies

This chocolate cake was made to celebrate a couple’s first anniversary. It was a recreation of the cake from their wedding, but instead of the original fudge pinecones, I decorated it with cheerful daisies for a fresh, joyful twist.

The simple yet elegant floral design added a personal touch, making the anniversary cake feel both familiar and beautifully renewed; a sweet way to celebrate their first year together.

Little Cakes, Big Flavor

When asked to make two small cakes, a carrot cake and a pumpkin spice cake, I decided to add a little creative touch to the decorations. I piped a few carrots on top of the carrot cake and a pumpkin on the pumpkin spice cake, making it easy to tell the two cakes apart while adding a charming, playful detail.

The result was both practical and delightful, giving each cake its own personality while keeping the focus on the delicious flavors inside. Sometimes, it’s the little touches that make a cake extra special!

Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs, and More Dinosaurs!

Dinosaurs never seem to go out of style, especially when it comes to celebrating a 5-year-old’s birthday. This cake was all about embracing that excitement, with a bold and playful dinosaur theme that instantly brought smiles.

Creating the three fondant dinosaurs was a fun challenge. Each one had its own personality, and shaping the details really brought them to life. It’s always so satisfying when a design comes together just as imagined.

To finish it off, I added a piped blue buttercream ombré effect around the cake. The gradual blend of colour added movement and depth, tying everything together and giving this dinosaur cake an extra pop of fun.

A Sweet Secret: Gender Reveal Cake

This gender reveal cake was truly an honour to make. Being trusted with the big secret before the family knew was both exciting and a little nerve-wracking, but of course, the secret was kept safe until the celebration. There’s something so special about being part of such a meaningful moment, knowing that one slice would reveal a surprise everyone had been waiting for.

Now that the party has long since passed and that sweet baby is a few years old already, it feels safe to share that the cake was a vanilla cake with a strawberry cream filling. The soft pink center made for a joyful reveal and added an extra layer of sweetness to an already unforgettable day.

A Toothless Birthday Adventure

My nephew was absolutely obsessed with How to Train Your Dragon, so when his mom asked if I could make him a Toothless birthday cake, I didn’t hesitate for a second. I was definitely up for the challenge. There’s something extra special about making a cake for family, especially when you know how much joy it’s going to bring. I could already picture his face lighting up the moment he saw it.

The cake itself was a vanilla pound cake, sturdy enough to shape and perfect for carving. Carefully sculpted fondant slowly brought Toothless to life, one detail at a time. It was a fun, creative process and such a cozy reminder of why I love baking. Turning a favorite story into something sweet, personal, and unforgettable.

This birthday cake was inspired by Disney’s Planes and made for a little fan who loves everything aviation. The cake was half chocolate and half vanilla, giving a delicious variety of flavors to suit any sweet tooth.

The centerpiece of the cake was a carefully crafted fondant plane, Dusty Crophopper himself. Every detail, from his wings to his cheerful expression, was sculpted with care to bring the beloved character to life.

Creative Colors: Crayola Crayons & Paint Cake

This playful cake was created for a birthday child who has a true love for art. From the very start, the goal was to make a cake that felt colorful, fun, and full of creative spirit—just like the little artist it was for.

The base of the cake was designed as a crayon box, providing a sturdy foundation and a bright, cheerful look. Sitting atop the box was a paint can, adding a whimsical three-dimensional element that immediately captured attention.

In front of the paint can, a row of fondant crayons was carefully arranged, giving the cake a realistic and vibrant feel. Tiny fondant paintbrushes were added in front of the box to complete the scene, making it look like the tools were ready for the next masterpiece.

The fondant animals were a joy to create, bringing each little pig, goose, and chicken to life with playful details. A Hummingbird Lover’s Dream Cake

This birthday cake was designed for someone with a deep love for hummingbirds, making it a truly personal and meaningful celebration. From the moment I received the request, I knew I wanted to create something delicate, colourful, and full of life, just like these beautiful birds.

The cake itself consisted of two large layers of marble cake, each covered in smooth cream cheese icing to provide the perfect canvas for the decorations. I wanted the surface to feel fresh and airy, reflecting the lightness and grace of hummingbirds in flight.

Fondant flowers were carefully handcrafted to add pops of colour across the cakes. Each bloom was unique, mimicking the variety and vibrancy of a garden that hummingbirds might visit. This attention to detail helped bring a whimsical and natural feel to the overall design.

The stars of the cake, four hummingbirds, were painstakingly sculpted from fondant. I focused on getting their proportions and wing details just right, aiming for realism while keeping them playful and charming. The hummingbirds were positioned as if they were hovering gracefully above the flowers, adding dynamic movement to the cake.

The arrangement of the flowers and birds was carefully planned to create a balanced composition. I wanted every angle to be visually engaging, whether someone was looking from the front or side. The interplay of colours and shapes made the cake feel like a little garden in full bloom.

While creating these intricate decorations was time-consuming, the process was incredibly rewarding. I loved seeing the cake slowly come together, each flower and bird adding another layer of beauty and charm.

The hands-on experience was both challenging and rewarding, giving me the chance to learn from mistakes in a low-pressure setting. By the end of the class, I felt more confident in my abilities and inspired to apply these new skills to future cake creations.

A second cake I attempted at home

Lemon Blueberry Cheesecake Cake

I came across this stunning cake online and couldn’t resist giving it a try. It features two layers of lemon blueberry cake sandwiched around a luscious lemon blueberry cheesecake layer, all covered in smooth vanilla buttercream icing. To add extra flair, the cake is drizzled with lemon-flavored candy melts and garnished with fresh blueberries and lemon slices for a bright, fresh finish.

Orange-flavored with bits of strawberry and blueberry, and topped with a luscious black raspberry buttercream.

Cookie Dough Stuffed Cupcakes

These gourmet cupcakes were inspired by the popular chocolate chip cookie cakes. After finding a picture and a recipe for edible cookie dough, I decided to create my own version. The cupcakes start with a moist vanilla cake batter sprinkled with mini chocolate chips. Once baked, each cupcake is stuffed with a portion of edible cookie dough, topped with brown butter buttercream, another ball of cookie dough, and finished with a chocolate chip cookie sprinkled with mini chocolate chips.

The result is a decadent treat for cookie and cupcake lovers alike. The combination of soft cake, creamy buttercream, and rich cookie dough layers creates a truly indulgent experience. The first picture shows the inspiration, and the second captures my final creation; a fun, playful, and utterly delicious gourmet cupcake.

Strawberry Lemonade Cupcakes

I like to call these cupcakes “Strawberry Lemonade” for their bright, refreshing flavors. Inspired by this picture I came across, I created lemon-flavored cupcakes stuffed with homemade lemon curd and topped with a buttercream frosting coloured and flavored with powdered freeze-dried strawberries.

To finish, each cupcake was garnished with a glazed strawberry and delicate white Belgian chocolate curls for a touch of elegance. The second picture shows the final creation. A playful, vibrant, and delicious cupcake that perfectly balances sweet and tangy flavors.

Oreo Lover’s Cupcakes

My daughter is a huge Oreo fan, so I decided to create some Oreo-inspired cupcakes. I came across this picture of a cupcake that sparked my creativity, and I set out to replicate it. I baked rich chocolate cupcakes and filled them with marshmallow fluff; a fun but tricky element to pipe.

The cupcakes were then topped with a vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream mixed with Oreo crumbs, finished with a mini Oreo on top, and sprinkled with a few extra crumbs for texture and visual appeal. The end result was a deliciously indulgent treat that perfectly captured the spirit of the classic cookie in cupcake form.
