A sweet and salty homemade treat
My children have been asking me to make these sweet and salty pretzel treats for quite some time, and with Valentine’s Day approaching, it felt like the perfect opportunity to finally give them a try. Not only are they festive and fun, but they also make lovely little gifts for friends, teachers, or neighbours.
To my delight, they came together fairly quickly and were just as delicious as we imagined. Crisp pretzels wrapped in soft caramel, dipped in chocolate, and finished with a sprinkle of cheer. A simple homemade treat that feels just a little bit special.
Ingredients
-
Pretzel rods
-
Soft and chewy caramels (Werther’s worked wonderfully)
-
Chocolate for melting (milk, dark, white, or candy melts)
-
Optional sprinkles or drizzle chocolate for decorating
(You can also use homemade soft caramel candy if you have a favourite recipe, but the store-bought soft caramels are wonderfully convenient and consistent.)
How to Make Caramel Twist Chocolate-Dipped Pretzel Sticks
1. Prepare the Caramel
Unwrap the soft caramels and place two pieces together. Roll them between your hands or on a clean surface to form a smooth rope.
Gently twist the caramel rope around a pretzel rod, leaving a few inches clear at the bottom to hold later. Repeat until all your pretzel rods are wrapped.
2. Melt the Chocolate
Melt your chocolate using a microwave in short intervals or over a double boiler, stirring until smooth. Any type of chocolate works well, and candy melts are a great option if you’d like to match colours for different holidays or events.
3. Dip and Decorate
Dip each caramel-wrapped pretzel rod into the melted chocolate, coating as much or as little as you like. Gently tap the pretzel on the side of the bowl to remove any excess chocolate; this prevents pooling underneath and gives a cleaner, more polished look.
While the chocolate is still wet, sprinkle with edible decorations or drizzle with a contrasting chocolate colour for an extra special touch.
4. Let Them Set
Place the decorated pretzel rods on a parchment-lined tray and allow them to set completely at room temperature or in the fridge until firm.
Once fully set, they’re ready to enjoy or package for gifting!
Tips for Success
-
Work in small batches so the chocolate stays smooth and easy to dip.
-
If the caramel becomes too soft while working, pop the wrapped pretzels into the fridge for a few minutes before dipping.
-
Use a tall glass or jar for dipping to make coating easier and neater.
Storing & Gifting
Store the finished pretzel sticks in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week, or refrigerate for longer freshness. They package beautifully in clear treat bags tied with ribbon; perfect for Valentine’s Day, holidays, or simple homemade gifting.
These caramel twist chocolate-dipped pretzel sticks are one of those treats that look impressive but are wonderfully simple to make. Sweet, salty, and full of homemade charm, they were a big hit with my children and made their Valentine’s sharing extra special.
Sometimes the best treats are the ones made together in the kitchen; quick to prepare, fun to decorate, and even more fun to give away.
